by Clifford Landers from Australia A middle-aged Sri Lankan's attempt to travel to Canada on an Australian passport alleged to have been borrowed from a resembling Australian citizen was thwarted by immigration authorities at the Sydney airport recently. During interrogation, which was conducted after a few suspicious issues, it was found that the passport was issued over 13 years ago but the suspect was unable to converse in english. A one-way ticket also ignited the suspicion as he claimed that he was travelling on a holiday to Canada. With the usage of computer data, immigration authorities are reported to have questioned on the persons residential details such as street, suburb and resident number, which the suspect had failed to answer accurately. After further investigations, the suspect was found to be a Sri Lankan who had overstayed in Australia by nearly one year and was making an attempt to leave the country before the arrest. The owner of the passport resembling the suspect when contacted by immigration officials claimed that the passport was stolen from him and that he failed to report it to police or authorities. It is also believed that the passport was borrowed or was organised by a broker and the immigration authorities are attempting to trace the culprit. The suspect who was employed as a part-time chef while in Sydney had made a total confession and was taken to the Villawood Detention Centre. He has requested that he be released and sent back to Sri Lanka at the earliest. |
