by Rajmi Manatunga Following a clash at the Nittambuwa bus depot, the state run bus service in the Katunayake area has come to a standstill, greatly inconveniencing the commuters including foreigners arriving at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA). Depot Authorities said that the operation of CTB buses on the 245 route to and from Katunayake ground to a halt after the clash which took place last week between two Depot employees. "This so called 'strike' is entirely an act of sabotage initiated by certain political elements outside the Depot, who are making use of the issue to transfer two managers and a clerk not involved in the clash," Depot Chairman Nimal Ranasinghe told the Daily News. The Chairman said that the armed outsiders were interfering with the activities of the depot by obstructing the entrances and threatening employees, while the depot has suspended services of the two employees involved in the clash. "During the last two days, buses from Ja Ela and Kirindiwela depots operated in the area at our request but they have also been threatened by these people. We made several complaints to the police but nothing has been done yet," he complained. Among the commuters who use the bus service are foreigners arriving or leaving the country and thousands of employees working in the Katunayake Free Trade Zone who cannot opt to travel by private buses as the private buses terminate at Veyangoda without completing the journey to Nittambuwa. |
