Recommendations to eliminate all salary anomalies

by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi

The Health Ministry Sub Committee is now preparing recommendations and proposals which would eliminate all salary anomalies in the health sector in future. "We are now formulating proposals to eliminate the existing salary anomalies in the health sector," a senior official attached to the Health Ministry Sub Committee told the Daily News yesterday.

Ministry's Sub Committee headed by Dr. Nihal Jayathilake comprises Director General Health Services Dr. Athula Kahandaliyanage and three other senior Ministry officials. "The Committee has already worked out a number of alternative proposals seeking to eliminate salary anomalies in the health sector, effective for several years", added the official. Earlier, Health Ministry Secretary Dr. Reggie Perera said the report of the Ministry Sub Committee will be presented by August 28.

Meanwhile, the Executive Committee of the Health Services Trade Union Alliance (HSTUA) has decided to stage a one day islandwide strike on August 26 if the Health authorities fail to submit a basic report on salary anomalies before August 21. "We also urge the health authorities to give a final report before September 14, otherwise we will be launching an islandwide continuous strike from September 14," a spokesman of the alliance told the Daily News.

The spokesman said the recent salary hike approved by the Health Ministry to doctors have created a huge salary anomaly in the whole health sector.

The HSTUA comprises over 40 trade unions coming under the health sector and this includes Government Medical Officers, Assistant Medical Officers, Nurses, Professions Supplementary to Medicine, Technical Staff and Clerks.

However, a Health Ministry spokesman lamenting over the conduct of certain trade unions said that given the complex nature of the salary anomalies in the health sector, it is not possible to give a report within the time period demanded by the trade unions.

Last week, the alliance staged one day sick note campaign crippling the normal services at Government hospitals in the Western Province.
