Indika and Deepika top seeds at Gunasinghe memorial Tourney

Indika Prasad and Deepika Rodrigo are the top seeds in the men's and women's open singles events respectively for the Munidasa Gunasinghe memorial open ranking table tennis tournament which begins today at S. Thomas' College indoor stadium in Mount Lavinia. The tournament is being conducted by the St. John's Sports Club and approved by the Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Schools Table Tennis Association with the finals schedule for August 18.

Indika Prasad despite failing to reach the final of last weeks Ashok Melvani memorial tournament is seeded number one once again in the men's open singles ahead of K. S. T. Chalitha, Tharindu Samaraweera and Yohan Deshappriya. Deepika Rodrigo of Lake House SC is strongly tipped to win her second major title in two weeks as she is ranked number one in the women's open singles which has attracted a total of 64 competitors.

Kalpani Herath is the bottom seed and she is followed by Dilini Madawala and Saranga de Silva. However in the women's doubles Deepika Rodrigo is ranked number two along with her long standing partner Namal Gunasekera. The top seeds in the women's doubles are Kalpani Heath and U. Kotinkaduwa while the pair of S. de Mel and M. Kottegoda are seeded number three. Indika Prasad is seeded number two in the men's doubles with his partner N. Sampath with the combination of B. N. B. Jayasinghe and Tharindu Samaraweera ranked number one. H. Samaraweera and G. M. Liyanage are the third seeds while Yohan Deshappriya and K. S. T. Chalitha are ranked number four.

Kalpani Herath is also leading the challenge in the girls under 19 singles and in the girls under 17 singles. Sanduni Kavitilleke, Saranga de Silva and Ruhansi Wijekoon are seeded number two, three and four respectively in the under 19 singles. G. M. Liyanage of Dharmaraja College Kandy is set for a triple crown as he is seeded number one in the boys under 19 singles, under 17 singles and under 15 singles.

The other events that will be worked off are the girls under 15, boys under 13, girls under 13, boys under 11, girls under 11, boys under 9 and girls under 9. Jagath Rajapaksa former national table tennis player and presently the assistant coach of Lovellove Club in France will be the chief guest along with Mrs. Disna Rajapaksa.
