Asela leads Indoor cricket team The Ceylon Indoor Cricket Association (CICA) has appointed Lyndon Hannibal as Coach of the Sri Lankan Indoor Cricket team for the upcoming South Africa Tour to Sri Lanka for the Lanka Cement Trophy. Putting the Sri Lankan team through the paces in the run up to the tournament, Coach Lyndon Hannibal who was vice captain of the Sri Lankan team at the World Cup in New Zealand (2002) was nominated runner-up in both the Best Batsman & Most Valuable Player categories at this tournament. He also captained & coached the Sri Lankan Masters Team at the World Masters Series in Christchurch, New Zealand in April this year and has represented the country against the visiting Indians, Australians & English teams. He has, with no doubt the experience and expertise needed to put forward a strong Sri Lankan side. Twenty-six-year-old Asela Pathirana, fondly known as 'Pathi' by his teammates will captain the side for the fourth time, having last captained the team at the World Cup in Wellington last year. Educated at St. Josephs College, he is currently employed at Access International & represents the Favourites Sports Club in the Division one segment. With a number of national tournaments under his belt and international experience against Australia, India & England (for which he was awarded Man of the Match) Asela is a vastly experienced player and captain. Supporting Asela in the bid for the Lanka Cement Trophy is Sanjeewa Jayarathna who has been named Vice Captain. At 27 years of age, Sanjeewa ('Shaggy') has a range of Tournaments to his credit with a list of 'Man of the Match' and 'Man of the Series' awards to his name and is remembered for his 'last ball six' which enabled Sri Lanka to beat the mighty Aussies. Educated at Eheliyagoda Central College he too represents Favourites Sports Club. This will be the first occasion on which he represents the side as Vice Captain. Director Sports CICA, Romesh Kaluwitharan is quite confident that under the guidance of Coach Lyndon & Skipper Asela, the Sri Lankans will excel. |
