Kingswood - Thomian clash in Milo President's Trophy final

by Chris Dhambarage

A rousing game is on the cards when two equally good teams Kingswood College, Kandy and S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia battle it out in the Milo Schools Presidents trophy knock out rugby tournament final at the Sugathadasa Stadium today.

The match is of great importance for both teams because they have already knocked out some of the more fancied schools on their way into the final and are hoping to conclude the season on a grand note. For the Kingswoodians this will be a historic occasion considering the fact that they will be playing in a cup final only for the second time.

Kingswood College won the Milo President's trophy three years ago beating S. Thomas' College and quite strangely they are again vying for honours for the same title at a different venue. The Thomians experienced mixed fortunes in the current season but have improved tremendously during the latter stages and are set to deliver the final blow which would be a perfect ending for the season.

This has been a wonderful effort by the Thomians considering the fact that they lost their very first game this year and were placed fifth in the Milo Schools 'A' division league tournament final points table. They never looked the team that would go beyond the semifinals but they have certainly performed the impossibility with some stunning performances in their last two outings. The Thomians cleared probably their toughest hurdle last week by overcoming the league runners up Wesley College by 13 points to 12 in an absolute thriller at the same venue. They could now go into the important final with a good frame of mind because they have proved their true potential on more than a couple of occasions in the current season.

The Kingswoodians too have something to boast of themselves because they are the only unbeaten side in the current inter school season.

They made a clean sweep and went on to clinch the Milo Schools 'B' division league title while recording six victories in a row. They of course enjoyed some luck in the quarterfinals where they knocked out the formidable Isipatana outfit on a toss of a coin.

In the semifinals too they were stretched into extra time by St. Anthony's before Weerakkody's penalty put them in the final.
