Death penalty for makers of fake drugs? NEW DELHI, Wednesday (AFP) A high-powered government committee recommended the death penalty for those who sell or manufacture fake pharmaceutical drugs which cause "grievous body harm or loss of life". R.A. Mashelkar, who headed the committee, said in an interim report that tough new laws should also include a provision to detain those who were suspected of manufacturing fake drugs. "The Mashelkar Committee has recommended stringent measures... We also want strong laws," Health Minister Sushma Swaraj told reporters. She said legislation was likely to be introduced in the current parliament session based on the interim report without waiting for the final version to be released in October. Swaraj said even human rights activists were not likely to oppose the death penalty as the crime amounted to mass murder. The death penalty in India is usually reserved for cases of murder when it is established the offender carried out the crime with the deliberate intention of killing. |
