Petes organise soccer tourney to promote peace

The inaugural inter schools invitation peace soccer tournament organised by the St. Peter's College Soccer Unit will be worked off from August 18 to 23 at St. Peter's College grounds, Bambalapitiya.

The teams participating in this tournament are St. Patrick's College Jaffna, St. Henry College Illavalai, Hartley College Point Pedro, Jaffna College Vaddukoddai, St. Xavier's College Mannar, St. John's College Jaffna and St. Peter's College Colombo.

The objective of the soccer tournament is to build and foster bridges and mutual trust with the firm belief that peace and harmony in Sri Lanka can be achieved by interacting in a healthy manner between the students of North, West, South and East. This soccer tournament for the lads from the North and Mannar will be an opportunity to exhibit their skills in this game and it will also be an exposure to different cultural patterns and social traits.

The opening ceremony of the tournament will be held on August 18 at 8.30 a.m followed by the curtain raiser match between St. Peter's College and Hartley College at 10.00 a.m. Management Consultant Nivard Cabral will be the chief guest for the opening ceremony.

The Peace challenge trophy which will be awarded to the champions is presented jointly by Rev. Fr. Felician R. Perera, Rector of St. Peter's College and Rev. Fr. B. F. Boniface, parish priest and Dean of the Deanery of Illavalai, Jaffna. The runners up trophy is donated by Sayon Balasuntharam of the United Kingdom. The Tharsisius challenge trophy awarded to the third placed team of the tournament is donated by the Tharsisius family.

In addition there will be special awards to the best player of each school, best goal keeper, man of the final and best player of the tournament.

The two semifinals of the tournament will be worked off on August 22 with the final schedule for August 23 at 4.00 p.m. The vice president of the Asian Football Confederation Manilal Fernando will be the chief guest.
