Banda and Menike win Gold Medals The national wheelchair marathon organised by the National Federation of Sports for the Disabled was held in Mahawewa on Sunday the 27th July 2003. Many wheelchair users representing sports clubs from the armed forces and the civilians took part in this event. The event commenced at 11 a.m. from Mahawewa town and covered the distance of 21.5 km. passing Madampe and Galahitiyawa junction before it finally reached Mahawewa once again. Some of the wheelchair users who took part in this event had previously taken part in international events in Japan and Korea during the past few years. They are namely Bandara Menike, Jayathilaka Banda, Thusitha Mahindasiri and Sanath Sisira Kumara. The first ever wheelchair marathon was held in 1992 and since then it has been a frequent feature in the National Sports Festival Games for the Disabled in Sri Lanka along with other games.
