by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi Lionair, one of Sri Lanka's leading aviation companies' in a major breakthrough will enter the international airline market, with its inaugural flight scheduled for Sharjah in November this year. Initially, Lionair plans to fly to two international destinations." We are planning to operate three flights a week to Dhaka, Bangladesh and Sharjah, its Chairman Chandran Rutnam told the Daily News. "After we start flying to these two destinations, we are planning to fly to Melbourne, Australia," he added. Rutnam said he got permission from SriLankan Airlines to operate flights to these two destinations." It was recently announced that Sri Lankan aviation companies could fly to destinations that Sri Lankan Airlines is not flying to and that the national airline does not intend to fly upto next three years." Rutnam said he had already leased a DC-9 jet aircraft with 100 seats." It is now being refurbished with the Lionair cargo in South Africa and alreday, the staff is also being trained." Rutnam said he is now awaiting the approval of the Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority." We are expecting his approval shortly and we will be the first local passenger airline company to enter the international market." At present, Lionair operates two flights a day to Jaffna. " We are ready to opreate flights to other destinations in Sri Lanka and at the moment, we are awaiting the approval of the authorities." |
