An extensive Urban Development programme will be undertaken to develop Puttalam town by the UDA. This was decided at a conference held at the Ministry of Western Region Development with Minister M. H. Mohamed presiding at his Ministry on Monday. Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Alhaj A. H. M. Azwer explaining the importance of providing better facilities to the residents of Puttalam said that this important town in the northern point of the North Western Province had been neglected for quite some time without certain modern facilities and amenities that are found in township of this nature elsewhere. He said the population of Puttalam UC area is 26,000 but the influx of refugees who came from the North is 34,000, in the UC limit alone. Consequently, many facilities should be provided for about 60,000 people living in the UC area, Puttalam. Minister Azwer also said that a comprehensive Urban Development should consist of a supermarket, a modern bus stand and a full fledged library etc. Action also should be initiated to build a promenade in the style of Galle Face along the lagoon of Puttalam. The outer circular road, the lake shore and other roads in the town should also be improved and upgraded. Minister Mohamed said that he was glad to respond to the request of A. H. M. Azwer, who is in charge of the Puttalam electoral area, said that an estimated cost of Rs. 10 million would be allocated to provide modern facilities to the inhabitants of Puttalam. Minister Mohamed requested the UDA to draw up a complete development programme, and take action to the scheme inaugurate within two months. Counsellor, NWP, M. I. B. Hafi, GA Puttalam Jayalath R. V. Dissanayaka, Divisional Secretary Mohamed Nafeel, Chairman Puttalam UC Quinton Joseph and several other officials of the UDA participated at this discussion. |
