by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen, Kandy south group correspondent The third Kumbal Perahera of the Kandy Esala Perahera which paraded the streets on Monday night drew large crowds from all parts of the island. The final Kumbal Perahera will parade tonight before giving way to the more glamorous Randoli Perahera which will commence on August 7 and reach a crescendo on the final night on August 11. A large number of tourists were also seen this year and many spoke of the calm and peace which prevails in the country which prompted them to make this trip. The Kandy police as during the first two Kumbal Peraheras had imposed tight security with all the entry points to the city of Kandy being manned by check points where checks are carried on vehicles and persons if found necessary as a precautionary measure. People entering the route of the Perahera in the afternoon were physically checked. A notable feature this year has been a decrease of polythene due to vigilant action taken by environmental authorities. The Kandy Municipal Council provided drinking water on plastic barrels placed in the streets and also ensured the streets are cleaned up immediately after the Perahera had concluded. The public transport services provided services after the Perahera but the same cannot be said of the private coach operators as only a few private coaches operated mostly towards Digana and Matale. There were no private coaches towards Gurudeniya and Haragama. |
