Eagle launches cashless medical insurance scheme

by Chamitha Kuruppu

For the first time in Sri Lanka's insurance industry a 'cashless medical insurance' scheme was introduced by Eagle Insurance along with Medilink International in a bid to minimise the hassle faced by people when medical bills are reimbursed.

The cashless facility considered a giant leap in the industry is also expected to make positive changes in the ailing health insurance sector.

Eagle Insurance and Medilink International on Monday launched a strategic alliance whereby Medilink will handle the entire gamut of health insurance administration including facilitation of hospital admission, medical claims management and maintaining a close relationship between the insurer, policyholders and hospitals.

The cashless facility will enable policyholders to overcome financial worry at the time of discharge since Medilink is taking over the function of settling admission bills direct with the hospital.

Four leading hospitals Apollo, Asiri, Oasis and Nawaloka have already given the green light to be on the empanelled list and others including Durdans are most likely to join soon.

Medilink has a comprehensive and user-friendly IT system cornerstone of which is speedy service delivery, errorless claim processing and comprehensive fraud detection. Cost control and fraud minimisation is a major area of expertise.

Policyholders will be able to obtain information regarding the status of their policy including amounts received as claims. The web page for each individual will have his or her family details, policy number, policy period, coverage and benefit limits, claim amount availed, balance amount available among other information.

Policyholders will be able to check their claim status and obtain other information from the help desk maintained around the clock. Eagle Insurance General Manager, Corporate Lines Manjula de Silva said that this is a giant leap for the health insurance sector in Sri Lanka, which is in a state of crisis at present. He said that Eagle Insurance would make the 'cashless facility' a commercially viable activity at a time where insurance companies and their stakeholders are getting negative results from medical insurance schemes.

Managing Director of Eagle Insurance Chandra Jayaratna said the strategic alliance between the two institutions is a 'win-win' to all stakeholders, business partners, the management and customers.

Medilink International is a specialised organisation in the field of health management, which through extensive tie-ups has access to over 400 empanelled provider hospitals where the 'cashless' facility is in operation covering nearly 40 cities in India. The Chairman of the Medilink Dr. Utpal Ray is an eminent personality in the medical field having extensive experience in the health insurance sector.
