American property developer WSI Construction and Development Inc. in collaboration with Sri Jayawardanapura Kotte Municipal Council has launched a scheme to build 4,000 prefabricated residential houses for the people of the area.

Marked Rs. 375,000 each, these houses are targeted to meet the needs of low and middle-income earners, the initiator of the project, Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Ravi Karunanayake said.

This was launched as a result of a survey, which revealed that the housing requirement, is the highest priority of the people living in the area.

He said that he was hopeful that the project will improve their standard of living by satisfying their basic needs and added that the Sri Jayawardanapura Kotte Municipal Council (SJKMC) will implement this as a priority project to be completed within six to eight months

WSI President Ruben Caputo said that the salient feature of the scheme is that the prefabrication allows the owners to design internal settings of the house according to their wish.

He said that each house will be given a 20-year guarantee as they are made up to the highest standards with an insulated wall and a roof, anti-rust coating seal beams, zinc-aluminum coated steel sheets and quality finish. These houses will come with optional telephone connections and Internet facilities. Kotte Mayor Ranjit Coorey said that providing common amenities such as electricity, road, water and garbage disposal service to the scheme would be taken care of by the SJKMC.

WSI is a corporation chartered in California, USA with the headquarters in Santa Fe Springs.

Upon success of the project, the SJKMC and WSI are planning to start an upmarket housing scheme next year.
