A further 13 people were missing after the incident in the Diamir district near Gilgit, a town 240 km (150 miles) north of the capital Islamabad. Local residents contacted by phone told Reuters villagers had gathered around a house that had caught fire when explosive materials used in road construction stored inside went off. Much of the village was destroyed by the force of the blast, they said. State-run PTV television said 45 people were killed and 13 missing, while the private Geo channel put the death toll at 58. |
