Chanaka Silva overall winner by Chris Dhambarage Seasoned campaigner Dinesh Chanaka Silva of Sri Lanka Air Force was the cynosure of all eyes as he emerged overall winner at the Sri Lanka Ports Authority open racing cycle race concluded on Saturday. The event was conducted by the Interim Committee for Cycling in Sri Lanka in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Police and sponsored by the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL). The twenty eight year old rider and captain of the Sri Lanka Air Force Cycling Club completed the gruelling course of 331.14 kilometres with a timing of eight hours, eleven minutes and 39 seconds. He received the glittering Sri Lanka Ports Authority challenge trophy and a cash award of Rs. 50,000. In addition he won the sprint event and was placed second in the first stage which was worked off from Colombo to Galle via Matara covering a distance of 206.06 kilometres. Even then it was not the ideal way to complete the second stage of the race because some of the riders took a different route due to the heavy traffic jam experienced at Bambalapitiya. As a result the second stage winners were decided by the Jury of Interim Committee for Cycling, taking into account of Union Cycling International rules and the circumstances. The judgement was given on that basis. The promising Rohan Chanaka Seneviratne of 'Sama' Cycling Club had to be satisfied with the runner up place in the overall championship. Seneviratne received a cash award of Rs. 30,000 and a further Rs. 5000 for winning the first stage of the race with a timing of five hours, eight minutes and 19 seconds. The third place went to W. P. Wickrematilleke of Sri Lanka Army with a timing of 8 hours 11 minutes and 47 seconds. K. Sampath of 'Sama' Cycling Club came fourth clocking 8 hours 17 minutes and 45 seconds, K. A.
