Wan Ela camp issue: SLMM says ruling not based on Army info

by Ranil Wijayapala

The Acting Head of Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission Hagrup Haukland denied the claims by Thamilselvan in Sampur as reported in the Tamilnet website that the truce monitors have given the ruling on the Wan-Ela camp based on the information given by the Sri Lanka Army.

"The ruling of the SLMM was based on the map provided by the LTTE itself", Haukland added.

"We are sticking to our ruling and expecting a written response from Thamilselvan despite his remarks in Trincomalee", he said.

Asked about what would be his next step if the LTTE replies in the negative, the Acting SLMM Chief said they always expect a positive answer from the LTTE. "If their response is negative the matter will be brought to the notice of the Government and next to the Norwegian facilitators", he said.

Addressing the media personnel at the Sampur LTTE camp during his visit to Trincomalee last Friday, Thamilselvan has said that it was unjustifiable for the SLMM to ask the LTTE to remove the camp in Kurangupanchan as it is located in LTTE controlled area.Thamilselvan has reportedly said that they do not want to make an issue out of the Kurangupanchan camp matter. "But a section of the media and elements bent on disrupting the peace initiative are using the camp issue to achieve their ends", he said.

According to Thamilselvan the SLMM had believed the information supplied by the Sri Lanka Army at the first instance without verifying facts."The LTTE camp is located about 15 Kms away from the Sri Lanka Army camp.

Colonel Pathuman has already supplied a map showing the area in Trincomalee under our control", he has said.

"It is advisable for the parties concerned to put the matter aside", Thamilselvan has remarked.
