Yano asks Army to state needs by Ranil Wijayapala The visiting Senior Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Tetsuro Yano has requested the Sri Lanka Army to provide a detailed report on necessary modern equipment needed for expediting the de-mining process. The visiting Minister has made these remarks following a presentation made by Acting Jaffna Security Forces Commander Major General Paramee Kulatunga on the current situation of the Jaffna peninsula at the Palaly Security Forces Headquarters. Major General Paramee Kulatunga received the visiting Minister who flew to Jaffna from Colombo along with Minister Assisting Foreign Affairs Lal Dharmapriya Gamage, at the Palaly air port last morning. Major General Paramee Kulatunga has pointed out that the de-mining teams of the Army has cleared 1,753,332 square feet in the Jaffna peninsula while NGO's engage in the process have cleared 523,164 square feet. Major General Kulatunga has pointed out that if the Army will have to continue with the manual system for the de-mining they will have to take another five to six years to reach their target and it is a humanitarian need to de-mine the Jaffna peninsula to facilitate the resettlement process. The Minister has requested the Army to provide a report on the modern equipment they need to expedite the process. The visiting Minister is due to meet Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Foreign Affairs Minister Tyronne Fernando and will have official discussions with his counterpart Lal Dharmapriya Gamage today in Colombo. |
