Kandy spruced up for Perahera

by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy South Group Correspondent

Kandy which will be the venue of one of Asia's grandest and most spectacular Pageants, the Esala Perahera is being spruced up for the great event which commenced on August 2nd and conclude on August 12th with the water cutting ceremony followed by the Day Perahera.

Most Buildings in Kandy is being given a spring cleaning and most of them have been given a facelift by colour washing them. The most prominent among them is the old lady of Kandy - the Queens Hotel which overlooks the Sri Dalada Maligawa from which the Perahera will commence at the auspicious time of the day. A detailed programme of the entire Esala perahera put out by the Sri Dalada Maligawa has been circulated in the city and also displayed prominently in shops for the convenience of the public so that to decide the day they wish to see the Perahera.

The lake bund or more popularity known as the Walakulu Bemma as it resembles a cloud formation too has been given a coating of paint and Kandy Municipal Council has taken steps to repaint and re-letter the street name boards.

The bus halts in the city has been given a high pressure washing and the street railings too have been given a coating of paint.

For the information of the public as in the past, arrows will indicate the day's route of the Perahera so that people could take up positions early. Hotels and Guest Houses have received good booking.
