by Ranil Wijayapala The Navy arrested 22 would be local illegal immigrants who came in two dingies to board a fishing trawler, 12 miles off Wennappuwa coast in the wee hours of yesterday, a Navy spokesman told the Daily News yesterday. A Navy team deployed in the sea off Wennappuwa, alerted about a suspicious fishing trawler detected two dingy boats which were ferrying 18 people to the trawler. "One person aboard the dingy boat was slightly injured as the Navy had to fire on the boat as they tried to avoid the Navy", the spokesman added. The Navy arrested 22 people including the four crew members of the trawler and handed them over to the harbour Police at the Colombo Port. The Navy also in early July detected more than 70 foreigners who tried to board a cargo vessel in the seas off Tangalle. This was followed by a series of arrests of would be illegal immigrants by the Police from various parts of the country while awaiting their passage to West European countries. In the last month alone more than 600 would be illegal immigrants were arrested by the Police in separate operations. |
