US patrol hit in Central Baghdad, two casualties

BAGHDAD, Monday (Reuters)

A U.S. patrol was attacked with a grenade in central Baghdad on Monday and two soldiers appeared to have been killed, Reuters reporters on the scene said.

A U.S. officer at the scene told Reuters that two of his men had been badly wounded in the attack but declined to confirm they had died.

Reuters journalists saw two motionless soldiers, one slumped in the rear seat of the Humvee, the other lying on the road. Both appeared dead and were receiving no medical aid.

Local eyewitnesses said the two soldiers appeared to have died after a man dropped a grenade on their vehicle from a road bridge at an intersection in broad daylight.

In continual guerrilla attacks which have become more deadly of late, before Monday's attack 49 U.S. soldiers had died since Washington declared an end to major combat on May 1. Of those, up to Sunday, 16 had died in just the past nine days.
