'More women marathon runners in the country now' by Chris Dhambarage The vice president of the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka N. A. T. Jayasinghe said that the women's participation in marathon events have increased tremendously in the past few years. He said that there are about six good long distance runners in the country at the moment who are capable of completing the course in under three hours of time. This is a vast improvement considering the fact that in the past women marathon runners spent more than three and a half hours to complete the race. Jayasinghe said that the forthcoming Nestomalt Dinamina marathon to be held in Dambulla will be another good opportunity for the women marathon runners to prove their talent and potential. This event conducted by the Athletic Association and Sri Lanka and organised by the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL) and sponsored by Nestle Lanka Limited will be worked off on Saturday from Dambulla to Kekirawa covering a distance of 20 kilometres. Over two thousand competitors are expected to compete in the Nestomalt Dinamina marathon and the women's participation will be much higher than it has been on the previous occasions. Jayasinghe said that the Nestomalt Dinamina marathon will be conducted according to the international rules and regulations under the supervision of the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka. There will be three feeding points and four sponging points and the Athletic Association will deploy their officials along the marathon route to monitor the competitors. Jayasinghe said that from 1986 marathon races were conducted according to the international rules and regulations and since then long distance running have become more popular in Sri Lanka. |
