Paris bound team picked by Dinesh Weerawansa Sri Lanka yesterday finalised its team for the IAAF World Championships in France next month. The most notable omission was Asian Championship double gold medallist Rohan Pradeep Kumara Fernando, who was sacked from the team as he failed to run at last weekend's National Championships. The national athletic selectors who met last evening, made their final decision on Sri Lanka's men's 4 x 400m relay team for the World Championships in Paris. The exclusion of Pradeep Kumara Fernando has made way for Italy-based Manura Lanka Perera to the relay team. The five sprinters in the relay team are Sugath Tillakaratne, Prasanna Amarasekera, Ranga Wimalawansa, Rohitha Pushpakumara and Manura Lanka Perera. Sugath Tillakaratne, who was adjudged best male athlete at the Nationals, too made an eleventh hour entry to men's 400m individual event at the expense of Fernando. Earlier, the AASL said Pradeep Kumara Fernando has been picked to compete in both mens' 400m and 4 x 400m relay, irrespective of his performance at the nationals. Hence, Fernando took part in a meet in an open international meet in Teheran over the weekend, skipping the three-day National championship. The AASL Disciplinary committee yesterday decided not to send Fernando to any of the events in Paris. Instead, he will be issued with a charge sheet and could even lose his place in the Sri Lanka team for the 15th Asian Athletic Championships in Manila, if found guilty. Sri Lanka team for the IAAF World Championships: Susanthika Jayasinghe (Captain, women's 100m & 200m), Damayanthi Darsha (women's 400m), Sugath Tillakaratne (men's 400m and mens' 4 x 400m), Prasanna Amarasekera, Ranga Wimalawansa, Rohitha Pushpakumara, Manura Lanka Perera (all men's 4 x 400m relay), Brig. Palitha Fernando (Manager), Sunil Gunawardena, Dhammika Nandikumara (coaches). |
