LTTE undermining SLMM mandate - SLMM by Ranil Wijayapala The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) cannot approve the way in which the LTTE acted by organising a hartal in Trincomalee to stage a protest against the SLMM ruling over Wan Ela camp, Acting head of the Nordic Truce Monitors Hagrup Haukland told the Daily News yesterday. "The LTTE is undermining the mandate given to the SLMM to give a ruling through such hartals", Haukland added. He said the LTTE leadership would have prevented their followers from staging a hartal against the SLMM as they were aware the hartal was organised to protest against the SLMM ruling on the Wan Ela camp. Shops were closed and public transport came to standstill on Saturday in the Eastern town Trincomalee due to the hartal called by LTTE backed organisations in Trincomalee against the SLMM ruling. But reports from Trincomalee said that the hartal did not reach its target as less public support was extended to this hartal. Although, there were plans to continue the hartal yesterday too, it did not take place as planned, Haukland added. However, Haukland said they expect the LTTE to make an announcement on their stance over the Wan Ela camp. He refuted media reports that the Army will have to remove the camp with force if the LTTE does not abide by the SLMM ruling. "What I said was one of the available options. The first thing we expect the LTTE to do is to sit down and talk with the Government over the issue if they are not satisfied by the SLMM ruling," he said. SLMM Chief Tryggve Tellefsen who is now in Norway is also taking this matter with the Norwegian facilitators, Haukland added. |
