Daily news print media sponsor: Army looking for a better show this season Soccer was played by a composite team called "Army Sappers" at national level and this was built up through the enthusiasm of Major P. D. Ramanayake, the Officer Commanding 1 Field Squadron of the Ceylon Engineers. Many Ceylon players of repute were recruited to the unit and other units too followed suit. The Army Sappers team comprised outstanding players such as Lieutenant Christopher Ranasinghe of the Ordnance, Bdrs. Basheer Ahmed and Wijetunga, and Gnr. Jinadasa of the Artillery and L/Cpl Pingho of the CLI. All the rest were Sappers viz. Sgt. White F. Cpls. Vgn Hoizen Jayman, L/Cpls Fernando, Karunapala and Joseph, Sprs. Tissera RC and Ramasamy E. They entered the national finals in soccer more than once and were awarded colours along with several others who were members in Army teams. Outstanding football players during the period 1960-64 that represented the Army at National Level were Captain M. George CAC, Lieutenant S. Doranegama SR, Lieutenant C. S. Fernando CAC, Cpl Osmand YT CAL, L/Cpl Edmond PA CE, Spr Thajudeen, Pte Bucker TZ CLI, Gnr Perera MKM (CA), Tps Patrick P, Spr Somadasa RA, Spr Attipola T, Spr Amidon T, SP de Silva, Spr Rasiah CE, Wijetunga (GW), Pte Sathapala. |
