Int'l scrabbling Aug 2 and 3

The First International Scrabble Competition conducted by the Sri Lanka Scrabble League will be held at the Grand Oriental Hotel on August 2 and 3.

This was revealed at a press briefing held at the Ministry of Youth and Sports Auditorium on Wednesday, chaired by Minister Johnston Fernando.

After a briefing on what scrabble is all about and its beginnings from Rupa Wickramaratne, President, Sri Lanka Scrabble League, the Minister speaking said that he was very happy to be involved with the game of scrabble.

He thanked the league for inviting him and said that his Ministry and the government welcomed and appreciated any international tournaments in whatever sport brought to Sri Lanka and said that his Ministry will give all the help and encouragement for its progress.

The countdown has begun for those taking part in the first International Scrabble Competition to be held in Sri Lanka. Hopeful Sri Lankan competitors are practising feverishly at home, in the clubs, at schools and even on the computer. The prize package on offer is US $ 2,000.

The Sri Lanka Scrabble League boasts of many world-class players and is proud to be able to finally afford these budding champions an opportunity to play at an international level. Players from many countries, viz. India, Pakistan, Singapore, Malaysia, Bahrain, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates have shown interest in participating. 15 high-ranking players have been selected to represent Sri Lanka based on their performance in local tournaments.

The Sri Lanka Scrabble League (SLSL) was established in 1989 as a non-profit organisation whose aim is to popularise the English word game Scrabble in Sri Lanka. It provides opportunities for people from all walks of life from age 8 to senior citizens to play socially and competitively at national and international levels. Regular Scrabble sessions are held every Sunday from 1 p.m. - 6 p.m. at the Sumithrayo Training Centre, 60/7, Horton Place, Colombo 7 and anyone interested is welcome to play.

The SLSL is privileged to have the sponsorship of prestigious mercantile organisations and well-wishers.
