Death of former Daily News journalist The death occurred yesterday of Hugh Abeyaratne (85) a veteran journalist following a brief illness. A former employee attached to Lake House Mr. Abeyaratne worked on the Daily News Editorial as Chief Sub Editor. He was also the first Asian journalist to gain the Diploma in Journalism from the Thompson Foundation, UK with distinction. He has contributed articles to various papers and magazines after his retirement. His wife Dorothy pre-deceased him. He leaves his son and three daughters. His remains are now lying at his residence at No. 32, Welikadawatta, Rajagiriya. Funeral takes place at the Borella General Cemetery Christian Section today afternoon. CEB defers charging 2% interest The Minister of Power and Energy Karu Jayasuriya has taken steps to defer with immediate effect the decision taken by the Ceylon Electricity Board to charge an interest rate of 2% monthly for bills settled after a lapse of 15 days from the issuance of the bill to customers. As per the Minister's directive, the Ceylon Electricity Board deferred the practice of charging an interest on electricity bills from yesterday. Nippon company to take legal action It is learnt that the Nippon Telephone and Telegraphic Company of Japan has decided to resort to legal action in the International Court against the Sri Lankan Government for refusal to increase telephone charges of Sri Lanka Telecom. According to the Agreement entered into between the Government and Nippon Telecom of Japan telephone charges were subject to an increase last year (2002), but the Sri Lankan Government, considering the interests of the consumers turned down the request to increase telephone charges. |
