by Manjula Fernando and Rajmi Manatunga The Government has decided to upgrade the judicial service in the country by offering better training to judicial officers and computerizing court procedures. Cabinet Spokesman Prof. G. L. Peiris said that the move was among the measures in the Government's programme to provide relief to people, which include the protection of law and order by upgrading the police service and providing housing facilities to public officials. "The Government has communicated with foreign organisations and embassies to provide overseas training to judicial officers through an organised system of annual scholarships. The proposal will be discussed with the Chief Justice and the Judicial Service Commission before the necessary arrangements are made," he said adding that the computerisation project already initiated in courts will also be expedited to avoid law delays and improve efficiency. The Minister said that under the programme to provide housing to civil servants, priority will be given to low cost housing. He said that Malaysia will financially assist and provide expertise for the project. The first housing scheme will be inaugurated in the Galle district and will be expanded to other districts in future. |
