The Government has decided to introduce new measures to control illegal international telephone calls. A special unit to prevent international telephone calls taken through illegal means, is to be formed shortly, the office of the government spokesman said yesterday. Although the Sri Lanka Telecommunication Act of 1991 and the amended Act in 1996 have included these measures, international telephone calls obtained through illegal means have increased according to the Sri Lanka Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRC) and the country is losing heavily. International telephone call rates have come down drastically in a short time, after the removal of the IDD monopoly, bringing relief to subscribers while increasing the income derived from such calls. The task force formed under the leadership of the secretary of the Ministry of Mass Communication will gather details of individuals, societies and institutions which obtain international telephone calls illegally and prosecute them. The commission has asked the public to divulge any such information through 689345 (phone) and 689341 (fax). |
