by Chatura Vidyaratne Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has instructed the Special Task Force jointly operated by four Ministries to immediately provide employment to graduates once they complete their training under the Government training programme to train graduates. The Premier has strongly emphasised that this training is being given to the graduates with the intention of directing them for proper employment based on the nature of training they have gained. The Prime Minister has stated that provision of suitable employment to these graduates is the responsibility of this Task Force. The Task Force has been given the responsibility of implementing the Government's programme to train graduates. The Task Force has been set up jointly by the Employment and Labour Ministry, Cultural Affairs and Education Ministry, Tertiary Education and Training Ministry and Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry. Employment and Labour Minister and Chief Government Whip Mahinda Samarasinghe has been appointed the chairman of the Task Force. According to the statistics, there are 25,900 unemployed graduates in Sri Lanka. Of them, 18,000 graduates have been registered under this graduate training programme. The Government grants a monthly allowance of Rs.4000 per each graduate while the private sector institutions also grant Rs.2000 to each graduate who are registered under this programme. Therefore, each graduate is entitled to a monthly allowance of Rs.6000. Meanwhile, the World Bank has granted Rs.1000 million to Sri Lanka to provide jobs to 10,000 graduates during this year once they complete their 12-month training period. During the training period, these graduates will also be given a training in the English language and computers. At present business enterprises connected to various business chambers in Sri Lanka are estimating the amount of graduates who can be employed in their institutions. |
