Harshani and Irusha in big upsets It was a day when two big seeds were laid low by their young Sri Lankan lions in the 26th Asian Junior Chess Championships at Camelot Beach Hotel, Negombo, here today. Defending Champion Deepan Chakkravarthy (India) and Akranja Seyed (Iran) and Luong Phong (Vietnam) and Kruttika Ndig (India) led in the boys and girls section with 3.0 points respectively. Junior National Champion Harshani Konara from Mahamaya School, Kandy stunned highly rated Indian Nalluri Vinuthna in an exciting petroff game that lasted around five hours. Harshani overcame her time pressure blues to effect a fine rook ending victory over the experienced Indian. Harshani moves to 2.0 points and meets another Indian International Mahima Rajamohan in the next round. Sri Lanka's Dimuthu Priyadarashana kept his chances of a higher placing scoring over Mohamed Ali of Bangladesh. Dimuthu remains in 2.0 points and meets FM Abhijit Gupta of India in an interesting encounter in the next round. Promising Irusha Palawatta (1.5) from Trinity College, Kandy downed Olympiad player and National Junior Champion M.K. Athula Russell in a Nimzo Indian game. Irusha snatched the exchange and hung to precious material to effect the second upset of the day. The eleven round event concludes on 26th July with the Asian Junior Champion gaining the International Master title. |
