Gishanthi and Sashika among top goal shooters Sunil Abeyawardana from Jamaica KINGSTON, Jamaica, Sri Lanka's Gishanthi Jayakody and Sashika Samarasinghe were among the top goal shooters at the 11th World netball championships which ended at the Jamaica indoor stadium in Kingston on Sunday. Schoolgirl Gishanthi Jayakody from Vishaka Vidyalaya was placed sixth in the overall list of top shooters out of 62 competitors selected from a total of 24 countries. She was successful in collecting a total of 308 goals out of 358 attempts from nine outings in this tournament. This was the first occasion where a Sri Lankan had reached a similar feat in the World championships. Gishanthi Jayakody was easily Sri Lanka's most outstanding player of the tournament and did the bulk of the scoring along with Sashika Samarasinghe. In fact Samarasinghe who also had a satisfying tournament was placed 25th in the overall list of the top shooters contest. Both played a dominant role in Sri Lanka's success in this tournament where they registered five good victories out of nine outings. As a result Sri Lanka were able to finish in the 18th place out of 24 countries. |
