Ratnabhoomi scheme will win public confidence - Rajitha

Wadduwa special correspondent

The Government has introduced a series of programmes for the welfare of the people. The Ministry of Lands in keeping with the progressive policies of the Government plans to provide deeds of ownership to 1.2 million families from the North and South before the end of this year, said Lands Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne.

He was participating at a ceremony to distribute deeds of ownership to 301 families in the Kalutara district under the Ratnabhoomi land distribution programme held at the Kalutara Town Hall.

Minister Senaratne said the deeds of ownership of lands programme will commence in Matara and end in Jaffna. The President has given her full consent for the implementation of this project.

There was no proper distribution of land in the past as there was favouritism and other regularities. Under the Ratnabhoomi programme, lands could be leased to the banks even to obtain loans. This scheme becomes very useful when constructing a house", the Minister said.

He said this is the first such occasion since independence that land has been distributed and the deeds of ownership given in a justifiable manner, which has been much appreciated by the people. This programme has been very well researched before implementation so that there can be no conflicts or misgivings about it in the future.

Minister Senaratne said the major problem facing the country today is the problem of land and 85% of civil cases are connected to land disputes.

The Ratnabhoomi land distribution scheme will not give way for irregularities and corruption and will be implemented in a manner that will win public confidence, he said.

The Land Reform Commission which was earlier running at a loss has now begun to make profits after the reforms which were initiated and is no more a burden to the Government coffers, the Minister said.
