Unique Pharmaceutical to step up business in Lanka

by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi

Unique Pharmaceutical Laboratories which won the Merit Award at the recent Suppliers' Convention of the State Pharmaceuticals Corporation (SPC) is now in the process of reinvigorating their business development plans in Sri Lanka.

"We are making arrangements to increase our presence here by introducing more quality drugs at an affordable price - even covering the North-East areas," its Marketing Manager Bankim Vakil said in an interview with the Daily News.

The company won the SPC's Merit Award for supplying quality pharmaceutical items at an affordable price on time. Unique was among the first Indian companies to enter the Sri Lankan pharmaceutical market.

Unique has already drawn up plans to increase its presence here by increasing the number of its field force staff. The Unique Pharmaceutical Laboratories, one of India's fastest growing pharmaceutical firms is a division of the renowned Indian company J.B. Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Limited.

Approximately 51 per cent of its pharmaceuticals are exported to around 50 countries including the USA, Russia, CIS countries and many in Europe, Africa and Asia. "We are planning to introduce new products to Sri Lanka, mainly in three segments namely Diabeto, Respiratory and Oncology", Vakil said.

He said the drugs manufactured at their company have a good demand in Sri Lanka and last year alone, the company had business here amounting to around US$ 1.2 million. "We have got a good response from members of the medical profession in Sri Lanka and the SPC award itself speaks volumes for the quality of our drugs."

In order to face the ever increasing challenges, Unique invests in research and development of pharmaceutical items. "Our research and development mainly focuses on Novel Drug Delivery Systems (NDDS), New Chemical Entities (NCEs), natural products and intellectual property rights." he said.

He said they focus more on branded generics which will ensure quality drugs at an affordable price. Vakil said the company continuously invests in setting up state-of-the-art pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities."

Some of these facilities are enjoying the highest certification from drug regulatory authorities in many countries including US, FDA, EDQM and MCC (South Africa)."

He said Unique was also the first company in Asia to obtain the prestigious EP4 European certification for manufacturing pharmaceutical items such as Metronidazole, Nifedipine and Diclofenac Sodium.
