Local hammock manufacturer targets export market

A hammock manufacturer from Ja-ela who has successfully launched his business in the local market plans to capture a share in the export market.

"We are exploring opportunities in the international market at present with the support from the Export Development Board (EDB). Our main target is the European and Japanese markets," Ravi Croos Moraes, the owner of Ravi International Hammocks told the Daily News.

A hammock is an item that is widely used for relaxation and today it is fast becoming a part of lifestyle in many parts of the world. Be it bird watching, reading, napping or any other leisure activity in the garden or the balcony, a hammock is ideal for relaxation, Moraes said explaining the purpose of having a hammock in a household. "It could be also used as a piece of furniture or bed.

However, most of his clients up to now are leading beach resorts, restaurants and departmental stores in Colombo.

Hammock manufacturing was first conceived in Moraes' mind when he visited India and bought one for himself there. "By that time we had been manufacturing camping tents for a foreign company and all of a sudden they terminated export orders due to some unknown reason. It was during this time that I decided to try our fortune in hammock manufacturing and since we started in June 2002, we have been able to popularise the 'hammock concept' here," he said.

Through this venture, Moraes has provided employment to about 20 persons, most of them being women and they get a regular income for a living. "We use only local materials and they are made to meet international standards. The raw material what we use in manufacturing hammocks is cotton ropes which are purchased from a Muslim family," he said.

Explaing the manufacturing process he said: "Everything is done manually. I have trained several people to train others. If we have more orders, we can employ more people," he said.

Perhaps the only such manufacturer in Sri Lanka Moraes is also keen on expanding his business within the country and run it on a commercial basis. CJ.
