Professional Bankers' Convention The 15th anniversary convention of the Association of Professional Bankers (APB) will be held on July 26 and 27 at the HNB Auditorium, HNB Towers. The theme for this year's convention is 'Emerging trends in the financial sector - Impact on the banking industry.' This year's theme has been selected considering the immense challenges confronting the banking industry in view of the emerging developments in the financial sector. In Sri Lanka much emphasis has been laid in the recent past on financial sector reforms and the banking sector has come under increased discussion from the public with regard to its role, ethics and regulation. While some call for greater regulation of the financial sector in light of certain incidences, others see a case for greater deregulation. There has also been renewed emphasis by the banks on good corporate governance and social responsibility. The country is also moving along the path of exchange control liberalisation, which itself poses many challenges and opportunities for banks. K. N. Choksy, Minister of Finance will deliver the inaugural address at the convention while Ambassador Alfonso Yuchengco, Chairman, Asian Bankers' Association will deliver the keynote address. The Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, A. S. Jayawardena will also address the forum during the inaugural session. During the five Technical Sessions which follow, several eminent professionals will make presentations in their respective area of expertise.
