SLPA acquires controlling power of Point Pedro Port The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) acquired the controlling power of the Point Pedro Port in the northern peninsula last week. Point Pedro is known as the most strategic point in transporting food and essential items to the peninsula, a SLPA spokesman told the Daily News yesterday. The port so far administered by the District Secretariat of Jaffna was acquired under the regulations of the SLPA Act, he said. SLPA chairman Parakrama Dissanayake and senior officials visited the Point Pedro Port last week to conclude the agreement. At present the SLPA manages Colombo, Trincomalee, Galle and Kankesanturai ports. Minister of Port Development and Shipping Rauf Hakeem has directed the SLPA officials to take steps to renovate and expand the pier of the port with new machinery and equipment in order to increase productivity in the Point Pedro Port. "We will start on this project shortly," Chairman Dissanayake said. At present, this port is used to transport food, pharmaceuticals and medicines, textiles, fertiliser, fuel and other essential items needed for the peninsula and about 10,000 tonnes of goods are unloaded a month. With the new renovation program, this quantity is expected to increase significantly. Forty-one persons employed at the Point Pedro port were appointed to the Sri Lanka Port Management Consultancy Co. which will be managing the Point Pedro Port hereafter. They received their letters of appointment from SLPA Chairman Dissanayake. |
