Cayman Islands lose to Lanka again Sunil abeyawardana from Jamaica KINGSTON. Jamaica, Sri Lanka beat the Cayman Islands for the second time by 81 goals to 36 in their 11th World netball championships ranking fixture played at the Jamaica indoor stadium. The Lankans who beat the same opposition 81-18 in their opening fixture of the tournament took an early lead and led 17-11 at the end of the first quarter. They increased that lead to 21-10 at the end of the second quarter and went on to add the finishing touches quite convincingly. However this was an improved performance by the Cayman Islands who collected a total 36 goals and also succeeded in putting the Lankans under some kind of pressure. Sri Lanka went into this game minus their key player Sashika Samarasinghe and her absence was badly felt throughout this match. Her replacement Prasadhi did not click well and wasted a number of scoring opportunities. Sri Lanka also gave a poor display in ball control and the opposition took full advantage of this to increase their tally. However Sri Lanka's performances in this tournament have come into high praise from the Lankans residing here in Jamaica who have even skipped their office work to witness the matches. Meanwhile the Jamaican team better known as the 'Sunshine Girls' are tipped to win the title having defeated Trinidad, South Africa and Samoa. In 1999 too they put up a stunning performance and came into the fourth place in the overall rankings. The defending champions Australia and the last year runners up New Zealand are the other unbeaten teams in the tournament. |
