LTTE yet to give word on dismantling Wan Ela camp

by Ranil Wijayapala

The LTTE Wan Ela camp issue is still in a deadlock as the LTTE Political Wing leader S.P. Thamilselvan has not given a final word to the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) Chief Tryggve Tellefssen on dismantling the camp.

Thamilselvan has refused to give a final word on the issue to the SLMM Chief Tellefsen saying that he wanted a team from Kilinochchi to visit the area to assess the situation before giving a final word on it.

However, according SLMM Spokeswoman Agness Bragadottir, the SLMM Chief has insisted that the LTTE should abide by the ruling given by the SLMM. "Ruling is a ruling - there is no negotiation on it" the SLMM Chief has told Thamilselvan.

According to Bragadottir, the SLMM Chief has requested for this meeting with Thamilselvan on Wednesday evening as Thamilselvan failed to give a final word on the issue.

The SLMM Chief also has insisted that they should give a specific date on which they would take action on the Wan Ela camp. Thamilselvan has also failed to give such a date for the SLMM Chief, Bragadottir added.

The Trincomalee SLMM conveyed the message on Tuesday that the Wan-Ela camp is located outside the LTTE controlled area after a fresh survey conducted on Tuesday on demand of the LTTE.

The LTTE demanded on Monday that the SLMM should conduct a survey in Wan Ela area in the presence of the LTTE area leadership to ascertain whether the controversial camp is located in the government controlled areas as ruled by the SLMM.
