Enormous task for personal staff of MPs in serving the people - Minister Azwer

From P. Rajaratnam in Nuwara Eliya

A conference on modern technology for MPs Co-ordinating officers, secretaries and others was held at the Nuwara Eliya Technical College recently. The Minister said that with the peace efforts, the country has to embark on giant development projects for the benefit of people.

Hence, the Minister said the tasks ahead for MPs and their officers will become enormous, and if they were to achieve it, they should work as a team.

The duties of MPs Secretaries, Co-ordinating officers and others become important to have an up-to-date and follow up of the electorate's needs and the aspirations of the masses, when they accompany the Members of Parliament within the electorate.

He said todays seminar for these officers, was essentially to request them to keep pace with the modern technology and other concepts, since they were the immediate 'bosses' of the people of their electorate, while their MPs have to be out of their electorates on more important duties and functions.

He said the ministry will hold seminars of this nature all over the country in order to appraise them on modern technologies and other subjects.

He also told them that they should keep in mind to serve all sections of the people irrespective of their political and other attachments.

He reminded them that whatever political debates and opinions they expressed within Parliament, once they were out of that august assembly, they were the best of friends and keep the mutual understandings and friendships.

Deputy Minister Muthu Sivalingam, paying tributes to Minister Aswer, said he as a senior parliamentarian, should advise the young MPs as to how some of them should uphold the dignity and decorum of the House, recalling some of the recent ugly episodes in Parliament. He said it was Minister Aswer, who gave them the necessary guidance and advises, when they joined Parliament for the first time.
