by Rambukkana special correspondent The leader and six members of a robber gang and others involved in more than 40 robberies using firearms were taken into custody by the Rambukkana Police. The gang had robbed cash and other belongings worth millions. The suspects were arrested at Rikillagaskada, Anuradhapura. Police recovered firearms at Siyambalangamuwa in Rambukkana. Police also recovered a T-56 firearm belonging to a constable of Galkiriyagama in Anuradhapura together with 44 cartridges and two magazines. According to the Police, the robber gang had engaged in cash and vehicle robberies in Kurunegala, Kuliyapitiya, Kegalle, Wellawa, Wariyapola, Gokarella and Chilaw. Police also recovered a large amount of cigarettes when they opened fire at the robbed van at Pathragala Estate, Rambukkana recently. According to the Police, a suspect said to be the leader of this gang was in Police service and was dismissed from the post. Another suspect is famous for criminal activities in the Kegalle area. Police hope to arrest a suspect who is an Air Force deserter. Police said that other suspects who are in custody had escaped from Negombo and Kurunegala prisons. This Operation was carried out on the directions of OIC Rambukkana Police O. P. Amarabandu, OIC Ranjith Wijesinghe of the Crime branch and Sub Inspector Ganganath also participated. The suspects were produced before Kegalle Magistrate and remanded till July 25. Rambukkana Police are conducting further inquiries to arrest other suspects. |
