COLOMBO (Lankapuvath) - Fifty five schools in Jaffna that were badly damaged as a result of the war have been renovated with the assistance of the European Commission, a spokesperson of the delegation of the European Commission told Lankapuvath. The Charge D'Affaires of the European Commission delegation to Sri Lanka Wouter Wilton said that the Jaffna schools renovation project was completed by GTZ, International Services Asia within six months. The total cost for the project was in the region of 600,000 Euros. A sum of 9,287,200 Euros was spent for school furniture and the construction of fifty five schools was completed at a cost 506,182,000 Euros. The project to renovate 55 schools in Jaffna was commenced in November 2002. The delegation of the European Union said that the completion of renovating 55 schools under the project in Jaffna within six months was a remarkable achievement. The ceremonial hand over of 55 renovated schools in Jaffna, which came about as a result of funding by the European Union, will take place on Tuesday 22, at the University of Jaffna. The European Commission delegation to Sri Lanka will host the event. The Minister of Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Refugees, Dr. Jayalath Jayawardane will grace the occasion as the Chief Guest at the ceremony. |
