Health authorities to conduct viral study

Health authorities will conduct a viral study on the impending viral flu which is fast spreading specially among schoolchildren.

The study is to be conducted by the Medical Research Institute in collaboration with the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children (LRH).

Earlier, Health officials warned of an impending viral flu similar to an epidemic - mostly among schoolchildren in the country.

"However, there is no big threat as the patients recover after several days," said Director of the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children Dr. Wimal Jayantha emphasising that parents and school authorities should be more alert about this situation.

High fever, severe headaches and vomiting are the three main symptoms of this flu, said Dr. Jayantha adding that everyday a large number of schoolchildren are admitted to his hospital.

"Also the flu causes dehydration in infected persons. Therefore, they should be given more fluids in that situation," he added.

"A large number of children amounting to around 100 are daily seeking treatment at the OPD of the Lady Ridgeway hospital while advising that it is most advisable for parents to seek medical help as the symptoms are mostly similar to meningitis".
