Dehiwela-Mt.Lavinia Mayor escapes assassination bid

by Asanga Warnakulasuriya

Two unidentified gunmen who came in a van had repeatedly opened fire at the double cab driven by the Dehiwela-Mt. Lavinia Mayor, Danasiri Ameratunga at Kohuwela at dawn yesterday, Kohuwela Police said yesterday.

The gunmen had shot five times with a 9mm pistol at the double cab.

The Mayor was returning home after attending a party.

According to the mayor, the gunmen had shot once through the left window and were chasing his cab in their van firing, until the cab turned towards the mayor's home. The Mayor had escaped without injuries.

Police suspect the motive behind the gunmen was to "finish off" the mayor who he was actively involved in demolishing illegal structures in Dehiwela town and preventing drug abuse.
