by Ranil Wijayapala Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has expressed his concern over the spate of political killings in the North East when he met Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission Chief Tryggve Tellefsen yesterday at Temple Trees. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has expressed concern to the SLMM Chief that the killing of political opponents allegedly by the LTTE has become a controversial issue. The Premier's meeting with the SLMM Chief came yesterday following the SLMM Chief's three day visit to the Wanni to have discussions with the LTTE leadership on several issues including sea clashes and on the Wan Ela camp issue. Minister Milinda Moragoda, Defence Secretary Austin Fernando and the three Armed Forces Commanders were also present at this meeting in which the SLMM Chief briefed about the outcome of his three day visit to the Wanni, SLMM Spokeswoman Agnes Bragadottir told the Daily News yesterday. The SLMM Chief during discussions with LTTE political wing leader S.P. Thamilselvan also raised the issue on the killing of political opponents allegedly by the LTTE. The SLMM Chief has also told Thamilselvan the situation was detrimental to the ceasefire. However, Thamilselvan has told the SLMM Chief the LTTE has no connection with the killing of political activists in the North East. The SLMM Chief also briefed the Prime Minister about the discussion he had with the LTTE over the proposals forwarded by the SLMM to prevent sea clashes. The SLMM Chief said: "There was obvious interest from both parties (the Government and the LTTE) for reaching a final set of proposals on the way that will prevent future sea clashes." The SLMM Chief met Sea Tiger leader Soosai in Mullaitivu on Wednesday morning and handed over the same set of proposals, which he handed over to the government on sea clashes. Soosai has told the SLMM Chief that he would consider the proposals and convey his observations later. The SLMM Chief has also briefed the Prime Minister on the ruling given by the SLMM on the Wan Ela camp issue. SLMM Deputy Chief Hagrup Haukland and SLMM Chief of Operations also participated at this meeting. |
