Army in hard fought 33-25 win over Havies

The Sri Lanka Army came up with a superb second half rally to score a hard fought 33-25 win over Havelocks Sports Club at Galle Face on Sunday.

The soldiers were off to a flying start when in the 6th minute off a second phase move full back T. A. Silva joined the line and when challenged slung out a pass to Sithara Fernando who scored by the corner flag. T. A. Silva added the extra points with a spectacular conversion. Ten minutes later they increased the lead when off a three quarter move in the Havelocks '25' Kenyan centre Pascal Watukeha crashed through to touch down under the posts after brushing aside several defenders. With T. A. Silva making no mistake with the conversion the soldiers took a 14-nil lead.

Six minutes later Havelocks came back storming to reduce the deficit when flanker Sitaleki Mafalio scored a try after a forwards rush. Jiffry Saheed converted and also fired across a 20 metre penalty to make it 14-10 in favour of Army.

Five minutes before the breather Havelocks won a line out in midfield and set the three quarters in motion and the move ended with centre Joseph Waqa falling over for a try by the right corner flag. On the stroke of half time the park club grabbed the lead when Jiffrey Saheed fired across a 40 mere penalty and Havelocks led 18-14.

The gallant soldiers fought back in the second half and their Samoan No. 8 One Okasone powered his way to touch down twice within 10 minutes. Then centre Kapila Knowlton scampered through to score mid left. Full back T. A. Silva converted two of those tries to give Army an unassailable 33-18 lead.

Just before the final whistle Havelocks No. 8 Miskin Deen barged through to touch down off a five metre short tap. Jiffrey Saheed converted to make it 33-25 at the final whistle.

A few minutes later CR's Fijian centre Charles Leisui made a powerful run and when challenged kicked ahead and skipper Shamly Nawaz who followed it fell on the loose ball in the in goal area. Roshan Peiris converted both tries and also put over a penalty. The lads from Maitland Crescent reduced the deficit through a try by Fijian Kinijoji Rakata to make it 17-12 in favour of CR and FC at 'Lemons'.

However CH and FC came up with a superb display in the second half to score two superb tries through Fijian Kinijoji Rakata who turned out to be their hero. Kandy remain unbeaten
