Protest against LTTE ceasefire violations by Ranga Jayasuriya Some 400 people yesterday protested opposite the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission office in Trincomalee against the LTTE's Ceasefire violations and the failure of the Scandinavian monitors to tame the Tigers. However the much publicised protest organised by the Sinhala Veera Vidahana failed to draw participants contrary to expectations. Only around 400 protesters turned out, according to the police. Pointing to the Tigers defiance before the SLMM ruling to vacate the Wan-Ela LTTE camp, the protesters demanded the truce monitors to take a hard line stance against the LTTE's ceasefire violence. A spokeswoman of the SLMM Trincomalee branch said the protest was "well organised". "They were shouting slogans demanding the SLMM to leave the country and the Norwegians to stop peace facilitation," she said. Referring to the protesters demand for a high handed action, the SLMM spokeswoman of the Trincomalee branch however said these disputes need to be solved through negotiations between the Government and the LTTE. |
