by Ranil Wijayapala

The Batticaloa Magistrate remanded eight LTTE cadres who were arrested by the Police on Monday night while in possession of T56 ammunition and hand grenades at a road block at Kalladi Bridge in Batticaloa on the Kalavanchikudi-Batticaloa road, Police said yesterday.

Police said that the detection was made at a snap roadblock on the Kalawanchikudi - Batticaloa road with the assistance of the Army. The roadblocks were part of the programme to curb the current crime wave.

Initially four females and four males who were aboard the vehicle and identified themselves as members of the LTTE had shown reluctance to being checked. The Policemen and the soldiers manning the roadblock has informed about this incident to their seniors and later to the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission in Batticaloa.

The checking of the vehicle was carried out in the presence of four SLMM monitors where four hand grenades, 10 9mm ammunitions, two T56 magazines and 30 T56 ammunitions were recovered

The SLMM has given the green light for the Police to take action against the eight LTTE cadres under normal law and they were taken to Kattankudi Police in the presence of the SLMM. The Kattankudi Police after recording statements from the eight LTTE cadres produced them before the Batticaloa Magistrate.
