Companies which open up payphone boxes at village level will be given a subsidy of Rs. 75,000 per box under a project started yesterday by the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka. Construction of village level payphone boxes has been going on for some time but the progress was slow. Therefore the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka has decided to increase the subsidy for constructing payphone booths from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 75,000 per box. The Telecommunication Regulatory Commission expects to open up 805 payphone boxes islandwide barring the Colombo and Gampaha districts with a maximum of 175 boxes in a district. The first company to sign the agreement under the new project was Worldcall Telecommunications Lanka Ltd. The agreement with the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka was signed yesterday. According to the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission there were 6679 payphone boxes in the country by March 2003. But the new project was initiated as rural villages did not have enough payphone call boxes. |
