FONCA (Friends of Needy Children Association) a registered NGO, has planned a weeks' holiday in August this year, its eleventh such venture! 65 girls, from six to eight children's homes and institutions in Sri Lanka will participate. This year, for the first time, the ongoing peace process will enable girls from 2 homes in the Eastern Province to join in too and make it a truly multi-ethnic experience, states FONCA in a press release. The venue at Tangalle, with its close proximity to a safe and scenic beach will give these girls (some from up-country, who have never even seen the sea!) the opportunity to enjoy the joys of the seaside. The holiday is supervised throughout by FONCA members to ensure that these underprivileged children have good food, fun and entertainment. Visits to places of interest in and around Tangalle have been planned. A majority of these girls do not leave their institutions during their school holidays, as they have nowhere to go and nobody to take them. Caretakers appointed by each institution will see to the individual care and welfare of the girls during the holiday period. Despite the ever spiralling cost of living, sponsorship for a child, remains at the original level of Rs. 500 each. FONCA depends on the generosity of sponsors to fund this holiday and it is hoped that readers will sponsor one or more girls on this holiday and help brighten the otherwise drab and humdrum lives of these unfortunate children. All donations will be acknowledged. Cheques should be drawn in favour of FONCA and sent to the Hony: Treasurer, at the following address, 429/2, Old Kandy Road, Nungamugoda, Kelaniya. |
